The freak snow storm that hit Portland means that a lot of my favorite places are closed. This, and I'm quite scared of driving. This means that I'm gingerly walking down the iced sidewalks trying to find a hot breakfast somewhere, and I was thrilled to find Byways Cafe still open.
I'm greeted by the sort of kitsch that can be best described as the sort of heartwarming scraps of a favorite memory. The food reflects that kind of comfort. The portion sizes are large and the coffee is strong. The all-female kitchen giggles in the back while the spiced corned beef (seriously, $8 for a ginormous serving potatoes, beef and eggs) warms up the system.
I'm still scared to go out driving, but in the mean time at least I've got somewhere to start the day.
